Week 5 results

By far the craziest weekend we've had so far in the college football season. #s 1, 3, 4, and 9 all went down, several to unranked opponents. Needless to say, this will lead to some shicanery with our picks. Let's assess the damage shall we:

Record to date:
ATS:12-11
SU:16-7

Purdue @ ND (pickem)
Pick: ND win
Result: 38-21 ND Win both. The Irish looked like hell in the 1st half but came out with a vengeance in the 2nd, putting up 21 points in the 3rd qtr in what was one of the best qtr's of ND football I've seen in years. Jimmy Clausen had a career high day for yards as did Armando Allen as the Irish finally got some positive yardage on the ground. A new freshman stepped up as Robert Blanton had a pick 6 to tie the game up in the 2nd qtr and my boy Michael Floyd added 100 yards receiving. Just a good all around day for the Irish

Bama @ Georgia (-7)
Pick: Georgia cover
Result: 41-30 Bama, lose both. A mother f-ing funeral indeed Bama. While Georgia made it a lil more respectable in the 2nd half this was a beat down. I know you cant drop OU when they won handily, but I have a hard time putting anyone in the country above Bama after this game.

Illinois @ Penn St (-15)
Pick: Ill cover, PSU win
Result: 38-24 PSU, win both. Cut it close but just under the spread. PSU looked quite good in this ball game and have taken over as front runners in the Big TenLeven after Wisco inexplicably blew their game to Michigan.

TCU @ OU (-19)
Pick: OU cover
Result: 35-10 OU win both. A dominant performance for the Sooners against a solid TCU team. These guys are nasty and while I disagree, are certainly deserving of being #1 in all the land. I can't wait for the Red River Shootout in 2 weeks, should be a hell of a ballgame.

Wisconsin (-6.5) @ Michigan
Pick: Wisco cover
Result: 27-25 Michigan, lose both. A pathetic chokejob by the badgers here. Up 19-0 at the half after forcing 5 turnovers, Wisco allowed Michigan to pull off the 2nd biggest comeback in school history. Just a shameful bedwetting when they had a chance to strengthen their hold on the Big TenLeven. In silver lining mode, it makes the Irish look better so I will take it.

Record this week:
ATS:3-2
SU:3-2

Record to date:

Week 5 picks

Already week 5? Yikes...College football is moving right along. Hopefully your respective team is fulfilling all your wishes and dreams, but odds are they aren't as that's just how it goes. We've had some barnburners so far this year and this weekend has a couple of matchups that could prove to be good ones. Game on:

Purdue @ ND (pick'em)
Pick: ND win. Both teams are coming in at 2-1, ND coming off an ugly, tho not unexpected, loss to MSU. Purdue's only loss this year was an OT loss to Oregon, however the Boilermakers are yet to leave their home field. Curtis Painter was called a darkhorse candidate for the Heisman this year by many experts, but so far has only thrown 3TD's along with 3 picks (compared to JC's 6-6 effort). However, Purdue is putting up 33 pts a game, but two of those were against N. Colorado and C Michigan. Look for the Irish, who have been good on Pass D this year to shut Painter down and finally get a running game going against a team giving up nearly 200 yards a game (192.33). Also, in completely useless info, Jimmy finally shaved that retarded haircut which can only help his check-downs.

#8 Alabama @ #3 Georgia (-7)
Pick: Georgia cover. This game scares me, I think Georgia wins, but by somewhere around 6-10. Clearly Vegas is inside of my sould as always and wants to prey upon my fear and doubt. What helped push me over the edge though is the insistence of Alabama's Asst. Coaches to give the Bulldogs some bulletin board material. See this video at around 1 minute in (Thanks EDSBS):

Hilarious, but probably unwise. Mark Richt already made a hilarious reference to it so I'm sure that the entire locker room is aware of what was said and will be sufficiently fired up. That and I'm scared to ever bet against Knowshon Moreno as the only thing matching my fear of him is my complete awe of his greatness.

#22 Illinois @ #12 Penn St. (-15)
Pick: Illinois Cover, PSU win. Illinois puts up too many points to lose by 15 IMO. I also cant trust a football team that employs the NCAA's highest paid mascot to cover 15 when the best team they've beaten this year is a toss up Syracuse, Oregon St, and Temple. Illinois took a good Missouri team to the limit in a 52-42 shootout and Juice Williams has been less...well..Juice Williams'y with the turnovers and is turning into a pretty solid QB. That all told, PSU plays real tough at home and has a solid D, I see them winning by 7.

#24 TCU @ #2 Oklahoma (-19)
Pick: OU cover. The last of the top 25 matchups for this week. However, the fact that TCU has a number before there name doesn't make me think they can stop the Sooners from dropping a half hundred on them. OU is stupid good this year while TCU is...well...I mean, they did blow out the Ponies... Blowout coming

#9 Wisconsin (-6.5) @ Michigan
Pick: Wisco covers easy. If I had one of those rock solid cant lose lead pipe lock of the week things, this game would be it. Michigan is horrible...Wisco is good...and the line is under a TD?? Michigan gives games away in as demoralizing a fashion as a team not named Washington can think up. Meanwhile, Wisco might actually be the best team in the Big TenLeven. I'm thinking Wisco by around 17 here, bet the house.

So those are the picks for this week. As always feel free to join along in the comments, make picks, call me names, suggest games I should've done, etc. Please continue to make it clear who you are picking both straight up and against the spread for scoreboard purposes. I'm glad some of yall seem to be enjoying this, if you haven't started yet, feel free to join in now. Enjoy the football this weekend kids, I'll be making my last trip to ND this weekend in a poor effort to recapture my glory days. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD night now.

Week 4 results

Another week of games, another batch of results...let's do the damn thing

Record to date:
ATS:8-10
SU:12-6

ND @ MSU (-9)
Pick: ND win
Result: 23-7 MSU, lose both. Well, I was afraid Javon Ringer would run all over us and run all over us he did. The more disturbing part of this game was ND's complete lack of a running game and inability to convert good field position into points. Either way, this was a game I was concerned about coming in so a loss isn't devastating to the team...so long as they recover next weekend against Purdue.

Florida (-7.5) @ Tennessee
Pick: UF cover
Result: 30-6 Florida, Win both. Like I said, this could've been a 15 point spread and I wouldn't have blinked. Florida just dominated this one.

LSU (-3) @ Auburn
Pick: LSU Cover
Result: 26-21 LSU, Win both. Auburn actually played a decent ballgame here.

Bama (-10) @ Arkansas
Pick: Bama Cover
Result: 49-14 Bama win both. Nick Saban roll tide. Alabama is starting to look like a real threat in the SEC while Arkansas is just looking weak. 2 pick 6's is just mean

Wake @ FSU (-4)
Pick: Wake win
Result: 12-3 Wake, win both. An ugly game from the uglier ACC. Just a weak conference this year, but a good win by Wake over the old power.

Record this week:
ATS:4-1
SU:4-1

Record to date:
ATS:12-11
SU:16-7

And for those playing the home game:

Travis:
Record this Week(and to date): ATS: 3-2 SU wasn't sure on the picks

David:
Record this week: ATS: 2-3 SU:2-3. Record to date: ATS: 9-7 SU: 11-5

Johnny Chan:
Record this week: ATS: 4-1 SU:4-1. Record to date: ATS:14-9 SU:17-6

Matt:
Record this week: ATS:2-3 SU: 4-1 Record to date: ATS: 10-13 SU: 14-9

Judson:
Record this week: ATS:1-4 SU: 3-2 Record to date: ATS: 6-7 SU: 10-3

As always thanks for playing and stay tuned, there's more to come.

Week 4 picks

Back again for another week, sadly the slate isn't nearly as good as last week's. Admittedly this week is gonna be a bit SEC heavy, but so it goes. As always feel free to play along in the comments. Thanks for making the picks clear last week, let's keep that up. If you've been playing along the scoreboard is up in the top right, if you haven't played yet come on in, the water's fine. To the games:

ND @ MSU (-9)
Pick: Clearly ND upset. The cover will be easy, 9 seems a little high to me. Admittedly I'm scared of MSU's running ability after the amount of yards we gave up on the ground to Michigan (or McGuffie that is). HOWEVAHHHHH, ND's Oline has been excellent in the pass block, JC is yet to be sacked. Not only that but the Irish have 2 deep threats in Tate and Floyd and Duval Kamara showed he actually can catch the ball. I really wanted to find the clip of the MSU radio guy, Mike Valenti, going ballistic but it appears to be gone from the interwebs...sad

Florida (-7.5) @ Tennessee:
Pick: Are you kidding, Florida to cover easy. If it was Florida -15 I'd still pick them no doubt. Florida is very good....Tennessee lost to UCLA, who in turn lost to BYU 59-0....Florida will kill them.

LSU (-3) @ Auburn:
Pick: LSU cover. After the abortion of a game Auburn put on last week with Miss St. I don think I will pick them ever this year. And I will spare you the "Well I know this, the Tigers are gonna win Saturday yukyukyukyuk" line that I'm sure will be heard throughout the media many many times this week.

Alabama (-10) @ Arkansas:
Pick: Bama cover. Hey Nick Saban Roll Tide. The young Tide team has a lot of talent while Arkansas lost most of their big guns. Makes for an easy pick for me.

Wake Forest @ FSU (-4)
Pick: Wake to WIN. I don't trust Florida St this year...hell I dont trust the ACC on the whole. But I like Al Groh, think he's a good coach and has a solid program going. That and who knows how many Noles will get arrested between now and Saturday.

There you have it, get to work kiddies. Go Irish!

Week 3 picks with a healthy dose of WEAR IT MICHIGAN!!!!!

So week 3 is in the books and I survived the monsoon at Notre Dame stadium to watch the Irish beat the hell out of Michigan in what could be best described as sloppy. Anyway, I'll put some random thoughts on the week up later, for now, let's do the damn thing.

Record to date:
ATS: 6-7
SU: 8-5

Mich (-2.5) @ ND:
Pick: ND Win
Result:35-17 ND, win both. ND took advantage of Michigan's newfound allergy to pigskin to win this game. Golden Tate had quite the coming out party and the O-line was able to keep their mulleted QB unscathed for a 2nd straight game. Michigan looked real sloppy but, Sam McGuffie is gonna be real good for a long time. The fact that he is only a freshman scares the hell out of me.

OSU @ USC (-11)
Pick: OSU cover, SC win
Result: 35-3 USC. Win SU, lose ATS. In my defense, my pick was made BEFORE Wells was declared out. But WOW does SC look good. Hard to believe anyone left on their schedule will give them a real test (until Thanksgiving that is).

Kansas @ USF (-3.5)
Pick: USF Cover
Result: 37-34 USF, Win SU, Lose ATS. A great ball game, sadly the spread got me...how does Vegas always know?

UCLA @ BYU (-8)
Pick: UCLA upset
Result: 59-0 BYU...Lose both...Umm, yah...Mormons still scare me. Wow was I wrong.

SMU @ TxTech (-36.5)
Pick: SMU Cover, Tech Win
Result: 43-7 Tech. Win both. Again Vegas was spot on, this time I scraped by just barely thanks to a garbage time TD. Harrell had 5 TDs passing compared to Bo Levi's 5 picks.

Record now:
ATS: 8-10
SU: 12-6

And for those playing the home game:
Johnny Chan:
ATS: 10-8
SU:13-5

Matt:
ATS:8-10
SU:10-8

David:
ATS: 7-4
SU:9-2

Judson (note, only SC and Tech games were counted as those are the ones I know came after the post. Not that I doubt you, merely on principle)
ATS:5-3
SU:7-1

Thanks for playing and as always, we will have some more games later this week. If other people are reading this, feel free to jump in the game at any time, it's fun for the whole family.

Week 3 picks

Hey Kids,
Well, this is the big week everyone pointed to during the summer. Obviously the big game is OSU USC, but compared to last week there is actually a pretty solid slate of games out there. Let's play the game shall we, as always i'm using centsports.com's lines.

Record to Date:
ATS: 6-7
SU: 8-5

Michigan (-2.5) @ Notre Dame
Pick: ND to win. Come on, what'd you expect? Here's the thing, I really do think ND was sandbagging a bit. The D was as vanilla as you could get, we all know Tenuta has 87 different blitz packages drawn up for this game. James Aldridge, one of the few consistent players from last year never even touched the ball last week. That, and my boy Michael Floyd only saw the ball a few times but was WIDE open on several occasions. We haven't even gotten to the fact that Michigan is trying a new spread offense w/o the necessary players to run said offense. Expect a much different, and better Irish team this weekend. (I hope...)

OSU @ USC (-11)
Pick: OSU cover, USC win. For some reason the closer we get to this game the more people are calling for a blowout. Sure, USC beat the hell out of UVA, but UVA then barely beat the mighty Spiders of Richmond. Yes OSU barely beat Ohio, but that was w/o Beanie Wells and clearly showed the Buckeyes were looking past their opponents. Yes I think USC has more talent, hell, they have 6 freaking running backs that would start anywhere in the country except maybe UGA and OSU, but the talent on OSU's D and ability of Wells will keep this game close I think. Plus, the Sweatervests only get blown out in big time games when playing SEC schools, not Pac 10.

Kansas @ South Florida (-3.5)
Pick: USF cover. This game is an interesting one. Kansas is trying to prove they werent just a fluke last year and USF has a chance to become the tallest midget in the God awful Big East this year. I think USF covers here, I really don't think Kansas will be on anybody's mind after a few actual games.

UCLA @ BYU (-8)
Pick: Mystery upset me, UCLA to win. I dont trust the Mormons, A: Mormons scare me in general B: Steve Young isn't there anymore. These little Utah schools popping up every few years are beginning to annoy me. UCLA's D stepped up against a highly touted Tennessee ground attack and for as bad as Craft was in the 1st half, he sure looked comfortable in the 2nd. Plus, BYU needed a ridiculous penalty call and blocked XP to avoid messing up the Radio farewell tour. (Sidenote: As much as I hate Tyrone, I feel really bad for Locker on that play. Dude just ran an awesome drive and probably has spent every moment since that flag flew blaming himself for that loss. Bad call)

SMU @ Texas Tech (-36.5)
Pick: SMU cover, Tech win. I'd love to see what the over under for this game is, anything below 85 I take the over w/o hesitation. There will be a LOT of points put up in this game. I think Tech wins by around 28-31. Their D gives up far too many points and they haven't really felt like embarrassing teams so far this year.

Well there you have it kids. As always play along in the comments, you can see the standing so far on the scoreboard over at the top-right of the site. Please do me a favor and spell out the picks, I know, I'm lazy, but it gets confusing switching between several different windows to see who picked with who and whether they meant the spread or just the win. Thanks kids, Go Irish!

Some random thoughts..version 3

So we already did the pick recap, by the way, check out the scoreboard up in the top right corner, nifty huh? That oughta make things easier to find for those interested in the NCAA pick em. So why not take a look at some other stuff that has been going on in the ever trustworthy bulletpoints I love so much...Game On:

  • Knowshon Moreno (UGA) is a freak of nature. Don't believe me? Dude can fly as seen here:

He is going to destroy us all...as long as he stays healthy that is.
  • Maybe I was wrong about this being the year UT doesn't get to 10. Yes their schedule through the Big XII is gonna be ugly, but Colt McCoy sure looks a lot more like healthy Frosh version than Sophomore slump version.
  • I'm not sure how much to take away from the fact that OSU only beat Ohio by 12, aided by some late Ohio turnovers. Combine the fact that Beanie Wells was out with the obvious "look past" quality of this week's game with USC coming up on Saturday I'm inclined not to put too much into it.
  • Why does Vandy own Steve Spurrier? 2 years in a row the Dores get the Gamecocks. This kinda stuff keeps up you gotta wonder how long it will be til OBC decides he's tired of middle of the road SEC talent.
  • Week 2 of the Radio Farewell Tour ended in amazing fashion. Again, if you haven't seen it, we have the technology:

Was there any doubt once that penalty got called that somehow that XP wasn't going in. Oh Tyrone...at least I hear your chipping has been superb as of late.
  • Going over to the NFL...maybe the Giants aren't gonna miss Strahan and Osi all that much, that D Line looked NASTY and Plaxico wrecked shop.
  • Clearly all of you have heard Tom Brady is doneski for the year. Nothing really more to say except wear it Patriots, I hope you have as much luck running it up with Matt Cassell.
  • If Diabetes makes all QBs play this well, will someone help me give it to Clausen? WOW did the Broncos look outstanding last night. I have said that I'm tired of Cutler and this year is his last shot...well, if he plays like that here's hoping he stays for years and years. Speaking of spectacular Eddie Royal was a mad man last night against a solid secondary. Just think of what he will do as the 2nd option once Brandon Marshall comes back next week. Definitely makes me feel good about the possibility of this season.
  • Aaron Rogers looked good in his first start for the Packers, congrats to him. The guy put up with so much bullshit thanks to the league's most overrated QB ever I'd like to see him do well. Had a running and a throwing TD and should've had a 2nd if it weren't for one of his lineman inexplicably being about 8 yards downfield when there wasnt a route in sight...dumb.
  • Speaking of young QB's looking good, Matt Ryan can play. Not only that but so can Michael Turner. 220 yds on the ground....he really did need to get out of LT's shadow.
  • In segue mode, speaking of the chargers BREAKING NEWS!!!! Merriman is done for the year. He was being an idiot trying to play, probably wise to sit it down. Either way, I love seeing that roid using cheater gone.
  • To finish out the schadenfraude, what a play by the Panthers (sans Steve Smith mind you) to win that game at the buzzer over San Diego.
That's pretty much all I've got, thoughts, fears, anything I missed? Let me hear it in the comments. Gooooooood night now

Week 2 Results

For starters, don't worry about ND. No, we aren't really that bad, we are completely sandbagging for Michigan. It's true, Aldridge never got a carry, we hardly blitzed at all, and Floyd only got the ball once, we've got all kinds of tricks up our sleeves so don't worry about the completely planned terrible looking performance. To the results:

Season to date: ATS: 3-4, SU: 3-4

SDSU @ ND (-22)
Pick: ND Cover
Result: 21-13 ND: Loss ATS, Win SU. Like I said, completely planned.

WVU (-8) @ ECU
Pick: ECU cover, WVU win
Result: 24-3 ECU: Win ATS, Loss SU. Skip Holtz is gonna get paid this offseason...yarrrr

Miami @ UF (-21)
Pick: UF cover
Result: 26-3 UF. Win both. Thanks to the fact that Urban Meyer is a huge d-bag who clearly bet on the game, UF covers with a completely unnecessary late FG.

SJSU @ Nebraska (-24)
Pick: Neb cover
Result: 35-12 Neb. Win SU, Loss ATS....So close Bo, so close. A nice start for Neb tho.

Stanford @ ASU (-14)
Pick: ASU cover
Result: 41-17 ASU. Win SU, Loss ATS. This went about as planned, ASU has a rowdy O but their D will be tested later on in the year in the Pac 10.

Tx Tech (-11) @ Nevada
Pick: TT cover
Result: 35-19 TT. Win both. Much closer than I expected, but Tech takes this one even with Harrel putting up a pedestrian (for him) 297 through the air.

So, thru 2 weeks I stand at:
ATS: 6-7
SU:8-5

And those playing along at home:
Matt: ATS: 6-7 SU: 8-5
Dave: ATS: 3-3 SU: 6-0
Judson: ATS: 4-2 SU: 5-1
Johnny Chan: ATS: 6-7 SU: 9-4

Thanks for playing, altho next week, please spell out your picks instead of saying going w/ me, or going with other people, gets might confusing, especially when people listed arent in the game. Some good showings so far, Hopefully we all start picking better.

Week 2 thoughts and predictions

Week 1 was pretty amusing, but a few teams did some things to make me think they wont be around for the long run. First off is Missouri...yah they put up a ton of points, but any team that lets Juice Williams throw for 5 TD's has some issues to shore up on D. Especially in this year's O happy Big XII, I think they could be in trouble. Georgia also seems to be losing starters at an alarming rate, granted as long as they have Knowshon theyll be good, but in the SEC you cant really afford to lose too many guys.

But that's the past, now is the future. Let's pick some games shall we. As always lines are from centsports, feel free to play along in the comments, I will track your picks along w/ mine

Record to date:
ATS: 3-4
SU: 3-4

SDSU @ ND (-22):
Pick: ND to cover. Come on...like there was any doubt I was picking ND to cover. Aside from me being a huge homer, SDSU just lost to Cal Polytech...that doesn't even sound like a real school. Cover city here we come

WVU (-8) @ ECU
Pick: ECU cover, WVU win. ECU impresesd me last week, and I think Bill Stewart is in over his head. Go get em Skip.

Miami @ Florida (-21)
Pick: Florida to cover. UF looked dirty against Hawaii last week, throw in the fact that they hate the U and Harvin is expected to play...yikes.

Now we can do some requests, cause there aren't that many great games...so:

San Jose St @ Nebraska (-27)
Pick: Nebraska to cover. Marlon Lucky will go off, O wasn't the problem for the Huskers last year and Bo Pelini oughta have the Blackshirts back up to form. Plus, if I didn't pick them Linds would be mad at me...and she scares me a lil bit.

Stanford @ Arizona St (-14)
Pick: ASU cover. I like Jim Harbaugh, I really do, but I don't think Stanford's D is good enough to stop the Sun Devil O, look for Carpenter to put up big #s.

Texas Tech (-11) @ Nevada
Pick: Tech cover. I dont understand why this line is so low, I know Tech still gives up too many points but are you kidding me? Nevada? They may run the pistol but i'm expecting Crabtree to be puttin the guns up at least 3 times this weekend.

So there you go, come play along in the comments. Remember I'm tracking both the record against the spread and straight up, so make sure I can tell if you are picking an underdog if it is to win or just to cover. Thanks

More importantly, in just a few short hours I will be back in Notre Dame Stadium. 9 wins this year for the Irish, there you go, I'm now on the record. The O will be MUCH improved with a much better line and Michael Floyd will be a household name by week 5. Good night, Go Irish!

Results for week 1

Well quite the exciting week 1 of college football. I felt the sunbeams of glory in some forms (Utah) and the stinging lashes of idiocy in others (Tenn) Let's go to the tape:

NCST @ S. Carolina (-12.5):
Pick: S. Carolina cover
Result: NCST 0- SC 34. Win against the spread (ATS) and straight up(SU)

SMU @ Rice (-3.5):
Pick: SMU to win.
Result: SMU 27 - Rice 56. Holy F what a loss both ATS/SU. SMU looked great in the 1st qtr and then just got curbstomped the rest of the way out.

Hawaii @ Florida (-36):
Pick: Hawaii to cover.
Result: HI 10 - FL 56. Loss ATS/SU. UF didn't need Percy Harvin

Utah @ Michigan (-3.5):
Pick: Utah to WIN.
Result: Utah 25- UM 23. Win ATS/SU. WOOOOOOO validation. Wear it Michigan, this game wasn't nearly as close as the score indicates. Utah really controlled this game.

Alabama @ Clemson (-4.5):
Pick: Clemson cover.
Result: Bama 34 - Clem 10. Loss ATS/SU. My pick was based on Spiller and Davis carrying the load...so Tommy Bowden gave them 8 carries total....are you freaking joking me??

Michigan St. @ California (-4.5):
Pick: MSU to WIN
Result: MSU 31 - Cal 38. Loss ATS/SU. A late 81 yd TD run sealed my fate here.

Illinois @ Missouri (-9):
Pick: Missouri to cover
Result:Ill 42 - Mizz 52. Win ATS/SU. Close cover in a shootout.

Record to date:
ATS:3-4
SU:3-4

Commenters records to date:
Matt: ATS: 3-4 SU: (same picks except had Utah Covering not winning, Cal winning not covering)
Johnny Chan: ATS: 4-3, SU 4-3 (same except Cal to cover)

We will be back with more later in the week, probably Thursday. Hopefully more people join in week 2, and hopefully I dont suck as bad week 2 haha. Got em coach.
